Supper
156 2nd Street between A&B - Great, great, great Italian food. Occasional chance for some cool-celeb spots too. Might have to wait in the wine (smoking) bar next door for 20.
A favorite of mine. Go!
Update April 2005 : Superb food and atmosphere. A little crammed together if you like that sort of thing. Relaxed. A NYC secret.

Gioia
47 Eight Avenue - 212 255 3900 - Gioia is a very new pizza spot in the West Village offering Neopolitan Pizza baked in a stone oven. 25 pizzas, 1 meat, 1 fish, 1 pasta dish. You get my drift.
Opening night was chaos but we hope it settles down.

Franks
88 2nd Ave, New York 10003 · 212-420-0202 (btwn 5th & 6th). Franks is an ultimate NY experience: dark, coxy, crammed Italian restaurant with bar. Young mix of East Village crowd with Greenwich Village visitors.
Home made pasta for a great price and the best baked chocolate cake/pudding I have had in town (they make it from the raw scratchonly when you order it). Friendly staff - and BTW - for a twist: try to get a bench overlooking the kitchen.
