Xunta
174 First Avenue (bet. 10th & 11th Sts.) NYC NY 10009 212.614.0620 - Xunta is a little hole in the wall place. Actually it looks more like one of the dive bars that neighbors it. But if that doesn't put you off, get yourself down for soem tapas that actually tastes like tapas (rare in NYC). The menu is from Galicia, wine is pretty good and on Thursday nights they do a little Flamenco. Recommended when you're just in it for the grub.

La Palapa
77 Saint Mark's Place, NYC 10003 212 777 2573 - If you're looking for a recommendation for a Mexican restaurant in the East Village, this is the wrong post. I came hungry. I left hungry. I told the waitress that I'll have the same as the fellow opposite me, she comes out later with a plate to share. OK, I understand the confusion. I ask again. After the plates are cleared she comes out later asking who wants desert. I ask where my dinner is. I tell the manager what I think of the ship he's running.

Supper
156 2nd Street between A&B - Great, great, great Italian food. Occasional chance for some cool-celeb spots too. Might have to wait in the wine (smoking) bar next door for 20.
A favorite of mine. Go!
Update April 2005 : Superb food and atmosphere. A little crammed together if you like that sort of thing. Relaxed. A NYC secret.

Take Out - East Village

Max (51 Avenue B, at Fourth Street; 212-539-0111), pastas ($9.95) - the crostinis ($4.95), and the meatloaf ($11.95)
No.1 Chinese (240 East Fourth Street, 212-375-0677) - beef chow mein ($10.95)

Decibel, Sake Bar
240 E. 9th Street, 212 979 2733 - you have to find the stairs down to this hidden basement sake bar and restaurant to find this East Village gem. Japanese businessmen sidle up to East Village students and Asian hipsters under the select lighting that hardly hides the arty graffiti on the walls. The food is cheap and great (includes katsuo, khada and saba miso (all fish dishes), udon or soba noodles, as well as shumai and various seaweeds and vegetables (but no sushi)).

229 E 7TH St & Avenue C, New York, NY, 10003, (212) 598-1098 - German indoor beer garden on the East Edge of the village: Ist Gut! A great range of Weisse beers, pilsners and other beers on tap. Food too: mustard potato salad, a classic weiner schnitzel or sweet red cabbage and schweinsbraten. Beers come in small, medium and Steins.
You know what sort of night you'll have if you go here. Can get a little loud. Think it shows the soccer too, call to find out.

VON
3 Bleeker Street (and Bowery), East Village/Noho Hip, candle lit bar normally playing chilled urban beats: Long bar to lounge along, cozy tables to rendevous at and another whole room to hang en masse with too!
Easy to get sucked in to Von all night long. Well worth starting an adventure around East Village from here - or rounding off the evening too.
Best bar in town, possibly.

The Hole
29 2nd Ave, (Btwn 1st & 2nd Street) (212) 777-9660 - Now here's an interesting bar. It's everything you imagine New York's underground scene to have been like in the 70s or 80s. Dark, dingy, dubbed with graffiti, plastic cups, smoking, meat-market, everyone on party tricks, dressing up wild, long line for the single toilet, guys dressing the same (if different colors), random music, random people. Recommended for that night out in New York's gutter.
NB Some nights are gay nights (1979 on Sundays).

One on One
Corner of 1st Ave and 1st Street, East Village - If you want to watch the football / soccer but don't fancy the spit'n'sawdust of Nevada Smiths or the darkness of the Red Lion try the decent and sizeable Irish boozer One on One at the bottom of East Village.
Waitress service, good Guinness (poor Stella by reputation), girl friendly. Several plasmas, couple of TVs and a big screen down the end.

Nevada Smiths
74 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10003 (212) 982-2591 - Dark, multiscreened pub dedicated to the enjoyment of beer and football(soccer). Irish staff. A basement floor lets the pub show seperate matches. Mismatch of folk from ex-pats to soccer loving Yanks.

Nu Blu
<62 Avenue C (off 4th Street) 212 979 9925 - An example of the growing trendification of Alphabet City. A single blue light hangs over the anonymous door to the bar of the NuBlu record label.
Cool, eclectic space inside that plays host to poetry readings, gigs and damn fine DJs. Behind a second room where some smoke, is a small garden that backs onto a green unused lot: see more here(?).
Probably worth checking out on the otherside of midnight.

Franks
88 2nd Ave, New York 10003 · 212-420-0202 (btwn 5th & 6th). Franks is an ultimate NY experience: dark, coxy, crammed Italian restaurant with bar. Young mix of East Village crowd with Greenwich Village visitors.
Home made pasta for a great price and the best baked chocolate cake/pudding I have had in town (they make it from the raw scratchonly when you order it). Friendly staff - and BTW - for a twist: try to get a bench overlooking the kitchen.

Angel's Share
<2nd Floor, 8 Stuyvesant St, (9th St & 3rd Ave) 212 598 3041 - A hidden treat: a chilled, dark, Japanese jazz bar. As part of - a crazy idea that recreates the back streets of Tokyo - on the second floor of a building in East Village.
When you walk up the stairs you'll find yourself in a bustling neon and plastic recreation of two street restaurants (Yajirobei and Gyuya). Take a sharp left to the anonymous door in the wall and slip into another world.
Classic bar with uniformed young Japanese staff and rules: no loud talking, no standing. Great martinis, decent cocktails, Japanese bar food and check out the East-meets-West 'fusion' artwork above the bar.
