The Green-Wood Cemetery

Alma

187 Columbia (Degraw/Cobble Hill W.) 718.643.5400. Alma is tucked quietly away in Red Hook (and even hidden upstairs in a pub). However, the long walk from the subway on Smith St is well worth the wait. Alma has one of the best views (if not the best) of the city on its heated deck. Simply magnificent skyline of Lower Manhattan. Oh, and the Mexican food is pretty decent too.

Stuff's NYC Bars

April's issue of Stuff magazine features two hall-of-fame dive bars in NYC:

Johnny’s Bar at 90 Greenwich Ave. in Manhattan -- The place is so small, you’ll practically be wearing women. Cute, just-out-of-college chicks come to drink the $5 shot-of-Beam-and-bottle-of-Rheingold special from noon to 7 P.M.

Sweet Up’s at 277 Graham Ave. in Brooklyn -- Owner Benjamin Shih demands that his staff pours stiff drinks and encourages binges. "We have obscene levels of hooking up," says Shih.

For the last few weeks, Damion Silver has been putting together a exhibition and art sale in New York to benefit the victims of the tsunami in South Asia. The show,called HARD TIMES, opens February 10th at Halcyon in New York, and features new work from over fifty amazing artists. All work is priced under $100.

Supreme Trading

213 N 8th St, Brooklyn (Btwn Roebling Street & Driggs Ave) 718-218-6538 - Supreme Trading is a 8,000 square feet party spot tucked away in Williamsburg. Nice design, varied. DJs play Thursday through Saturday in a back room that also hosts parties. Reportedly has a billiard room and outdoor smoking garden round but I missed them somehow.

St Helen's Cafe

150 Wythe Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211 (Btwn North Seventh Street & North Eighth Street) 718-302-1197 -The St Helen's Cafe is an off the beaten path small wonder fronted by a a stately glass-and-black-wood facade. Serves ok coffee and tea plus beer and wine, to a crowd that knows it's here. Garden in the back lets the arties chill in the summer heat.

57 Pearl Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn, NY 11201 - Halcyon used to reside on Brooklyn's Smith Street where you could sit back and relax in this bar/cafe/record shop. Even the vintage furniture you sat on was for sale.

Now they've moved to DUMBO and with only a record and small 'lifestyle goods' offering. But the store's still worth a visit. There's an amazing mural on the brickwork outside and check the funky interior!

The Boat

Smith Street, Cobble Hill - a good long narrow dimly lit drinking den with no name on the door (the door is metal with three slant windows in it - that's all i can say).

Perfect for a beer or two. A great juke box and chance to let your hair down. Beware of roving gangs of British fashion industry girls.

Cubana Cafe

110 Thompson Street (btwn Prince & Spring) 212 966 5366 - Very sweet cuban restaurant with large menu of simple but well made dinners, sandwiches and mojitos.

A perfect get away from the shopping crowd for brunch (after 11.30am) or the kick off for a night around Soho. Decorated just like a Cuban cafe, the staff are friendly and the prices great!

N. 13th and Wythe - Huge super warehouse space opened in 2004 featuring latest club nights and music acts.

Get a taxi there (you can get the subway to Bedford Ave in Brooklyn) but you may find a little trouble finding one back (there's a car service back on Bedford)

128 Smith St. (Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens) c/o Dean St, 718-923-0918- - great neighborly French bistro with decent size bar and fussbol. Can't go wrong - always a winner when taking visitors out in New York.

North 7th - Great Thai food in smart designed bar. Well worth the starting point before venturing around this great neighborhood.

125 Fifth Ave, Park Slope, Park Slope, Brooklyn - A good gig venue in laid back part of Brooklyn.

There are some great bands and acts that play here. Look out for what's going on there at their website. At times, expect a rather subdued crowd, as the New Yorkers like to appreciate their music sober.
